Bear Attack: Steiff new editions 2002

Club:
	Steiff Club pin, 10 Years of German membership, was issued to all German Steiff club members who joined the Steiff club in its first year of existence. This is a very collectable item, as there was only a relatively small number of Steiff club members in the first year of the clubs existence. The pin is made out of sterling silver and gold plated. It is 1 cm in diameter. The pin does not come with a certificate or box. EAN P0825

	Steiff Club Gift 2002, is a light brown miniature PB bear measuring 7 cm which comes in a box with certificate. He is fully jointed, has black eyes and his nose is stitched in a black color. Other issues in this series are a blond (1997), blue (1998), dark-brown (1999), black (2000), white (2001), rosé (2003), light blue (2004) and Little Richard (2005). A new series was started in 2006! 	Rabbit & Lamb Egg Cosy set. The Rabbit and Lamb are each 12 cm, made out of mohair and come in a box with certificate of authenticity. This is the first set in a series of three. The other ones are Hen and Chick (2003) and Bear and Elephant (2004). The edition size announced by Steiff is 4150. EAN 420276

	PB 28 is a white excelsior stuffed mohair bear. In sitting position is he 28 cm and upright 37 cm. 1902 is the key year that heralds the success of Margarete Steiff GmbH. The Teddy bear starts off on his voyage of conquest all around the world as "Bear 55 PB" and his successor, "Bear 35 PB". Their creator, Richard Steiff, continues to develop new variations of the Teddy bear and no less than 975,000 Teddy bears leave the production line as early as 1907, the so-called year of the bear. Therefore Margarete Steiff GmbH celebrated the centenary of the Teddy bear by producing a very special Club Edition for the loyal members of the Steiff Club. The original bear on which this bear is modeled was a direct descendant of "Bear 55 PB" and dates back to 1903/04. One of the rare remaining originals came under the hammer at the special auction held during the 5th Steiff Festival on 30th June 2001 and fetched the tidy sum of 36,000 DM. The designation "28 PB" indicates the size of the bear (28cm = measured sitting), P=plush and B=beweglich, the German word for jointed. His sealing-wax nose and shoe-button eyes deserve special attention. Cream-colored felt has been used to line his paws and soles of his feet. The porcelain pendant identifies the Teddy bear a s a 2002 Club Edition and, like the other Club Editions, the "Bear 28 PB" also has a gold-plated button and a consecutively numbered ear tag in his left ear. He comes in a box with certificate of authenticity. The edition size announced by Steiff is 5650. EAN 420290

	The Jubilee Set consists out of two 21 cm bear, one made out of a blue and the other out of a yellow mohair. The yellow and blue are the colors in the coat of arms for the city of Giengen, the birthplace of the Teddy bear. Each Teddy bear has a little bag over his shoulder embroidered with the Steiff logo and containing miniature versions of issues 1 and 40 of the Club Magazine (front and back pages). Already a traditional component of Club editions, the porcelain pendant draws attention to the 10th anniversary of the Steiff Club (1992-2002). They come in a box with certificate of authenticity. 	The Little elephant pincushion is 8 cm in size. The original little elephant on which this replica is modeled was produced in 1893. One of these was auctioned during the 4th Steiff festival in the year 2000 and fetched an amazing 46,872 DM. Little elephant "Elefäntle" is made of white felt, has a red felt saddlecloth on his back and is standing on three felt disks. Decorative silver-colored flowers and leaves adorn the felt saddlecloth and the top red felt disk. Like the original "Elefäntle", this little elephant also has an "open" trunk. The elephant is limited to 5000 pieces and comes in a box with certificate of authenticity. 	Decade bear - 10 years Steiff Club charter membership could only be obtained by German Steiff club members who joined the Steiff club in its first year of existence (April 1, 1992 - March 31, 1993). This is a very collectable item, as there was only a relatively small number of Steiff club members in the first year of the clubs existence. The bear has on his left paw the date when one joined the club embroidered and on the right paw "10 Jahre Steiff Club" (10 Years Steiff Club). The bear is 25 cm in size and wears the typical Steiff Club medallion on a red ribbon around his neck. Comes in a box with certificate of authenticity. The edition size announced by Steiff is 2650. 	The German Event bear 2002 was only available at special Steiff club events. He is made out of white mohair, 21 cm in size and wears a black vest which has this years logo for "100 years teddy bears" on the back. The event-specific date is printed on the front of the felt waistcoat. Bear is limited to 3700 pieces and comes in a box with certificate. EAN 420337

*Festival Specials:*
	Candey is the 6th special for the Steiff Festival and is the second in this series. He comes in an edition of 3000 pieces, is made of brown long-haired mohair, 30 cm in size, has a white colored bib and a growler. His nose and claws are hand stitched using black yarn. "6. Steiff Festival - Giengen 2002" is embroidered on the sole of his left foot. He comes with a small certificate of authenticity but does not have a box. Further issues in this series are Sandey (2001), Daddey (2003) and Mommey (2004). EAN 655609

	Replica Roly Poly Bear 1909, was produced in an edition of 500 pieces at the Steiff Festival in Giengen Germany. He is 23 cm in size, made out of blond mohair and comes with a certificate but without a box. EAN 671289

	The Bose bear 2002 is 25 cm in size and made out of light brown mohair. He is not limited (yellow tag) and comes in a wooden box with certificate of authenticity. This bear was not available in any store and one could only obtain one from Bose. EAN 000713

	Lars polar bear is made out of mohair woven fur, 27 cm in size and is not limited. Lars is a character from a popular German children's book series and movie. Comes in a nice presentation box but does not have a certificate. Other characters issued out of these children's book series and movie are Robby (2002), Lars (2003), Greta (2003) and Lemming (2003). 	Haribo Gold bear is a promotional item for the German firm Haribo, which produces sweets. He is not limited, 25 cm in size and has a small certificate of authenticity but does not come with a special box. EAN 354144

On his right paw is "80 Jahre" (80 Years) embroidered and on his left "Haribo Goldbär". 	Beatrix Potter - Peter Rabbit, 100 years Anniversary was available world wide except in the USA. In 1902, in the same year Richard Steiff invented the first jointed toy bear, a short children's picture book by Beatrix Potter appeared in England with a simple plot revolving around none other than little Peter Rabbit. The huge success enjoyed by this book was reported to Giengen by Steiff's English representative, Hughes. To celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Peter Rabbit this special jubilee edition was created of this famous bunny dressed in his blue jacket and slippers. Made from fine Alpaca woven fur, Peter Rabbit stands 27cm high and holds in his right paw a pink radish. Comes with certificate of authenticity in a collectors box. The edition size has not been announced by Steiff yet. 	Tigger, Eeyore & Piglet Miniatures are all made from mohair plush and 10 cm in size. The set is limited to 5000 pieces. Fine details such as Tigger's stripes have been added using an airbrush technique, all by hand. To prevent himself from freezing at winter time, little piglet is wearing his favorite sweater. An extra, blank Steiff button permanently fixes Eeyore's tail to his body. They come in a box with certificate of authenticity. 	Beatrix Potter - Peter Rabbit replica 1904-1905 is limited edition of 3000 pieces and 22 cm in size. Just like the original, this replica is crafted from wool plush and stuffed with wood shavings. His nose and mouth have been lovingly stitched by hand. Peter Rabbit is clad in navy blue felt jacket and red felt slippers with leather soles. Both the tailcoat and the slippers are embroidered in gold-colored thread. 	Teddy Engine Driver with Lenox Engine set consists out of a 18 cm Steiff Teddy bear dressed as a train conductor and a 23 cm Lenox Engine. 	The Centenary Trip set is a limited edition of 2000 pieces that has been produced in the great tradition of the world-famous companies of Steiff and Märklin. The set consists of a 9 cm tall Steiff Teddy bear "Conductor" and an exclusive Märklin H0 carriage. The combination of these two brands is particularly popular with collectors. The little conductor is wearing a felt jacket and cap. The beige-colored bear is made by hand from very fine mohair and has jointed arms, leg and head. 	Bertie the Pharmacist bear, is issued by a company called Alpenland-Pharma. 	The original Fraternity Member was manufactured by Margarete Steiff GmbH in 1912. This new edition is 40 cm in size, not limited and has been made of high-quality fabrics (not felt) and put together by hand in the familiar manner. His mouth and eyebrows are stitched by hand, as is the "dueling scar" on his cheek. He is available with six different cap colors. Does not come with a certificate or box. EAN 994890

	This Goebel-Steiff set called Me And My Shadow consists out of a girl Hummel figurine, 15 cm in size and a red-brown Steiff Teddy bear, 18 cm in size. The figurine has a special back stamp commemorating the 100th Anniversary of the Teddy Bear. The Steiff bear wears a porcelain medallion. This set comes in an edition of 10000 pieces with a box and certificate of authenticity. 	This Anna-Marie Goetz doll with Steiff bear set is limited to 1500 pieces. The doll is 58 cm in size and wears a dress typical for the year 1902, the birth year of the Teddy bear. 	The fifth LGB wagon is an American railroad passengers car. This one is called " Teddy Roosevelt". The car is 30 cm long and has two bears as passengers. One white one and one gold colored one, each is 7 cm in size and made out of the finest mohair. The Steiff and LGB logo as well as "Teddy Roosevelt" are written on the side of the passenger car. This set comes in a box but does not have a certificate of authenticity. 	The Roosevelt Nutcracker comes from the Erzgebirge mountain region in Eastern Germany and is made by the Christian Ulbricht Holzkunst company which is Europe's leading manufacturer of nutcrackers. This 46 cm in size nutcracker has been made according to the traditional art of wood carving and has been creatively outfitted with a Steiff Teddy bear. The nutcracker depicts Teddy Roosevelt, the 26th President of the United States of America. Nicknamed "Teddy", President Roosevelt was an enthusiastic hunter. The story about the way in which he spared a bear cub during a bear hunt that had been organized especially for him became so popular in America that his name was given to the "Teddy bear". The nutcracker is presented on an elegant mahogany pedestal with a brass plate bearing his name. His clothes reflect the fashion of the time, with a bowler hat on his head and the characteristic pince-nez perched on his nose. He caries "Stars and Stripes" banner of America in his right hand and a Steiff Teddy bear, 16 cm, in his left hand. Specially developed for the nutcracker, the design and color of this classical little bear corresponds to the popular style of the time and is just like the bear that Theodore Roosevelt gave his grandchildren to cuddle. 	The BMW Bear is 32 cm in size, made out of a light brown mohair and limited to 2002 pieces. The bear wears a racing overall. Unusual are the feet of this BMW Bear which look like shoes with embroidered shoe strings. Comes in a box but does not have a special certificate. EAN 995163

	The town chronicles of Leonberg name Heinrich Essig (1809 – 1889), an alderman of Leonberg, as breeder of the Leonberger dog. For love of his home-town Heinrich Essig decided to create a new dog breed which would resemble the lion in the coat-of-arms of Leonberg as closely as possible. With this in mind he crossbred a black-and-white Newfoundland bitch (Landseer type) with a Saint Bernard male and crossbred their offspring over the next four generations. The outcome, however, was not what he had envisioned originally, so that he out crossed the dogs with a Pyrenean Mountain dog. In 1846, finally, the first "Leonberger" was born. This Leonberger Plush Dog is limited to 1500. It was produced in close cooperation with the German Kennel Club for Leonbergers. The dog is traditionally handcrafted from mohair. Standing 31 cm and with a weight of 370 g this "mohair-Leonberger" is a favorite pet of its owner, no matter whether young or old, big or small. Comes with a certificate but does not have a box. 	For 34 years now, Peace Village Oberhausen has worked successfully to ensure that children across the globe suffering from serious illnesses or injured in wars receive at least basic medical care. 	This Teddy bear clown 1926 has a ruff around his neck and wears a clown hat. He is 70 cm in size, limited to 1500 pieces, comes with a gold-plated button in ear and has a growler. Comes in a box and certificate of authenticity. This is the fourth one in a series of big sized replica. Special Austria:
	Papageno, the Austria exclusive, is made of the finest light-blond mohair. Dressed in a feather coat of felt and a cap that looks like a bird's head, Papageno also carries an exclusive little bird of mohair on his arm and a wooden pan flute in his hand. He is 30 cm in size and limited to 1500 pieces. The song with which he introduces himself, "A jolly trapper of birds and I, And tra-la-la is what I cry", plays from a music-box inside him. Papageno is presented in a cloth bag embroidered with golden thread accompanied by a numbered and signed certificate. In the course of his short life, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote almost 20 operas. His last operatic composition, "The Magic Flute" is one of the most enchanting musical creations of all times with its exotic and fantastic "Papageno", a bird-seller dressed in the brilliant apparel of a bird. Mozart wrote the music for this opera within only a few months. On 30 September 1791, "The Magic Flute" celebrated a triumphant world premiere in Vienna. Mozart was already extremely ill at the time, and he died barely ten weeks later. 	The Munich Kindl bear is 27 cm in size, made out of white mohair and limited to 2000 pieces. It is wearing a black and yellow coat with a long embroidered collar. In its right paw, the "Munich Kindl" is holding a radish and in the left, a beer mug. Since the 13th century, the City of Munich has had a monk in its coat-of-arms. In the course of the 16th century, it became more child-like and so turned into the "Munich Kindl". Like no other German heraldic figure, it took on an independent existence from the middle of the 19th century and went its own way, forgetting the city coat-of-arms. It put down its prayer book and picked up a beer mug and a radish. The "Münchner Kindl" is to be found everywhere. Once you have consciously noticed what it looks like, it follows you around, turning up in very different places - on tram cars, postcards, manhole covers, beer mugs and right at the top of the tower on the Munich City Hall. And what does this "Münchner Kindl" hold in its hand - a book, beer mug or radish? Even older Munich people who learned traditional local history at school are doubtful about the answer to this question, sine basically everything is possible and right.
