click here for big picture The 1907 black "5228" Teddy bear, 40 cm tall and well looked after in the Steiff archives, was the inspiration for this exclusive 2008 Club Edition: the Mohair Teddy bear black 1907. He was probably also the model for subsequent series of black Teddy bears, such as the Mourning bear made in 1912, who however differed by having a stitched nose and eyes backed with red felt. This fine replica mirrors the original bear in every detail, including his striking sealing-wax nose. He is crafted from the highest-quality mohair plush with a deep black gloss. His paws are made of woolen felt and his mouth and claws are hand-stitched. He is stuffed by hand with fine wood shavings. His pendant depicts the 2008 Club logo. As a true replica he has, of course, the underscored button in his left ear in the exclusive design made of patinated steel, making him a very special member of his species. He is limited to 3000 pieces only and comes in an embroidered bag with certificate of authenticity.

click here for big picture Mozart’s fairytale opera “The Magic Flute”, provided the inspiration for this year's Margarete Steiff Edition. The emerald green “Papageno Teddy bear” is a dazzling apparition covered in feathers, and embodies the most lovable character in the Famous opera. The world famous “Pa-pa-pa” duet by Papageno and Papagena expresses through music that love overcomes all hardships. “The Magic Flute” premiered in 1791 in Vienna. In 2008 “Papageno” has his grand entrance as a bear soloist. The “Papageno Teddy bear” is once again a unique collectors item, which is produced using the most exquisite craftsmanship according to old traditions. As a special highlight this musical bear plays an extract from Papageno’s famous Aria “I am the bird catcher”. To create the “Papageno Teddy bears”, Margarete Steiff GmbH worked closely with Bischoff Textil AG in Swiss St. Gallen, the bastion of artful embroidery. In the Bischoff studios, elaborate embroideries are made, which can be found amongst many things, including the luxurious robes of couturiers. The “Papageno Teddy bears” should, of course, be wearing very special garments on their plush bodies. In almost all opera performances, the funny and lovable Papageno is a shimmering, colorful, fantastical design, who wears a jacket covered in feathers, which marks him out as a bird figure. But how can a Teddy bear have feathers? Simply to stick feathers on his mohair coat seemed all too simple. Real feathers play with the light and move in the wind. The only embroidery technique, which achieves a similar, three-dimensional effect is superposé embroidery. “This is a complex procedure, where part of the embroidery floats; i.e., moves freely in the wind”, explains Thomas Meyer, director of the embroidery department at Bischoff. “Therefore, samples and shapes of feathers were initially embroidered on etched gauze, and only applied to the upper edges of the emerald green mohair plush. The etched gauze will finally be washed out in an acetone bath, so that every feather flutters.” Apart from material, cut and colors, eye shape and size as well as the type of mouth and nose embroidery had to be decided. Eye catching aspects of Papageno are the luminous yellow cross-stitching on the otherwise lengthways stitched nose, the shiny black glass eyes, the feet and paws made of red wool, and the yellow “breast feathers” out of embroidered tulle, which spruce it up considerably. Since 2004, Margarete Steiff GmbH has been developing a collector’s item every year, which is produced as a limited edition exclusively for Club members. The Papageno Teddy bear will be produced in an edition of 500 copies; and in the style of his alter ego on the opera stage, he may sing in a growling baritone voice: “It is the highest of feelings, when many, many Papageno, will be the joy of their (bears) parents!” Opera fans are not the only ones to find a place for him in their hearts. His button in the ear; made out of brushed stainless steel with the initials MS, and the black woven label with the silver logo marks the Papageno Teddy bear as a “Margarete Steiff edition”. He is 33cm tall and comes with elegant, black-silver packaging and a booklet with a numbered certificate and production photos.

The unusual aspect of this bear is that there is no bear in this edition of 100 pieces which looks alike. Each bear was produced by one of the 100 lucky participants of the workshop organized by the Steiff Club during the Summer Festival. The workshop was totally sold out and many Steiff enthusiasts were disappointed that they could not take part. The bears paws are embroidered with the festival logo (right) and name of the participant and date of the event (left). Each participant could choose the color of the eyes and the yarn for the stitching of the nose, mouth and paws. The growler and eyes were put in by the participants as was the stitching done by themselves. They had to stuff the bear as well with some of the wood shavings after they had put in the growler. click here for big picture The Hime bear, is 25 cm in size and made from light blond mohair. Hime is the Japanese word for princess or a lady of higher birth. Note that although "princess" is usually given as the translation, daughters of a monarch are actually referred to by other terms, e.g. oujyo (王女), literally king's daughter. The word hime initially referred to any beautiful female. The antonym of hime is shikome (醜女), literally ugly female, though it is archaic and rarely used. Hime may also indicate feminine or simply small when used together with other words, such as Hime-gaki (a low line of hedge). This bear has a yellow tag, although it is only limited to 100 pieces, as his body is the Classic Teddy bear 1920 light blond (EAN 000645). click here for big picture The Aoi Teddy bear is 22 cm in size, made from light blond mohair and comes dressed in a nice gown. The body used is a classic 1905 Teddy bear with yellow tag. From the middle of February to the Hina Matsuri on March 3, an army of kimono-clad dolls are liberated from their packaging to decamp in living rooms all over Japan. Elaborate displays appear in the homes of families with daughters, and friends and relatives pay their respects to the diminutive dolls with shirozake (white sake) and chirashizushi (sushi rice scattered with colorful vegetables). There are 15 members in a full set of Hina ningyo (dolls) - Dairabina (the Emperor and Empress), two ministers, three court ladies-in-waiting, five musicians and three guards all dressed in ornate Heian period (AD 794-1192) costumes. Displayed on a five- or seven-tiered platform covered with scarlet felt, the figures are usually a gift from grandparents on a girl' first Hina Matsuri, or hatsuzekku. As it can be rather inconvenient to have a host of dolls in 2m-high display in the middle of your house for several weeks, it is now acceptable to display just the top two Dairabina, but regardless of number, girls are still expected to emulate the elegance of their Heian ancestors.Originally the effigies were called hitogata and made from paper or straw. The paper dolls were rubbed on the body to remove all impurities then thrown into the sea or a nearby river to carry away sickness and bad luck - in some places, like Awashima-jinja in Wakayama, this is still practiced today. Generally, since a Hina ningyo display typically costs in excess of JY500,000 it is kept as an heirloom and passed from mother to daughter, rather than thrown into the nearest river. As the role of the festival is to pray for the happiness and good health of little girls - with "happiness" encompassing beauty and early marriage - the void left by the departed "impurities" must be quickly filled with health and luck. This is done with the help of diamond-shaped, tri-colored rice cakes. The rhombus shape represents the heart, but there is some discrepancy about the meaning of the colors: One school of thought says white is for good blood pressure, green for healthy new blood and pink for the release of poison, but perhaps new growth, snow and peach flowers are more appetizing alternatives. Peach blossom is omnipresent during this festival, which is sometimes also called Momo no Sekku, (Peach Festival), because a girl should aspire to be as beautiful and delicate as a flower petal. Like many Japanese traditions, Hina Mastsuri originated in China, where it was celebrated on March 1, with paper effigies tossed into rivers. The date changed to March 3 in the Edo period, when the Emperor's wife held a doll festival for her daughter. In the interests of equality, the celebration spread to all daughters, but is still not a national holiday like Boy's Day on May 5. As soon as Hina Matsuri is over the display is dismantled to avoid the old superstition that families who are slow to pack them away will also be slow to find suitable husbands for their daughters. In essence, March 3 is to remind Japanese girls they should be as beautiful as a doll, as delicate as peach blossom, as colorful as chirashizushi, and as pure as snow with a healthy blood pressure, if they want to marry young! The bear in this outfit is limited to 100 pieces only and comes in a box with a certificate of authenticity issued by Targa Co. Ltd.

click here for big picture This Alfonzo Teddy bear is a replica, which means he has a white ear tag with black printing and this is very unusual for a exclusive. This bear was exclusively produced to celebrate the 100 year anniversary of Alfonzo, for a toy shop in Moscow Russia called Echelle. This teddy bear holds a unique history. In 1908 Prince Georgii Mihailovichk Romanov ordered a special soft Teddy bear from Steiff for his daughter Princess Ksenia. The bright red Teddy bear they received was named Alfonzo. In 1914 Ksenia took this teddy bear on her trip to England to accompany her to Buckingham palace where they were greeted by the royal family. The First World War made it impossible for the little girl to return back home and because of that she avoided the fate of her family who died during the Revolution. Alfonzo became a very special toy to her because it was the only memory left of her father. The Teddy bear served as her closest friend for the rest of her life, until her passing in 1965. In memory of its owner, the bear carries on a white ribbon around his neck a medallion with his portrait on inverse and memorable inscriptions on the reverse. Anniversary date and year of celebrating also embroidered on small pillow paws of the toy. He is 33 cm in size, made from red mohair, filled with wood shavings, limited to 1000 pieces only, comes in a box and has a certificate of authenticity which is written in Russian. click here for big picture The Ultimate Bagpuss cat, the most important, the most beautiful, the most magical saggy old cloth cat in the whole wide world is probably more known to friends in Europe where this character was the star of a short lived, but highly loved and memorable children's television program of the same name. The Bagpuss cat is 23 cm in size, not jointed, has big blue eyes, a long tail, and is dramatically striped in almost neon pink. These pink stripes were individually hand stenciled, a truly time consuming labor of love! He also has an open mouth and long whiskers (giving him a thoughtful, pensive look...) just like the original. Bagpuss is made from rich, lush alpaca, which is a special type of wool that feels dense and warm like the coat of a sheep. The Bagpuss TV series ran on the BBC for only 13 episodes in 1974. The programs were made using stop frame animation, and always included stories based on folktales, simple songs, and wholesome life lessons. Even though the program is now 25 years old, in 1999 the series came first place in a BBC poll selecting the nation's favorite children's shows; it also came fourth in a 2001 BBC poll of The 100 Greatest Kid's TV Shows. The original Bagpuss has now retired to the Rupert Bear Museum in Canterbury, UK. He is made especially for the Danbury Mint in UK, is not limited and does not have a box or certificate of authenticity.

click here for big picture The British Collectors Teddy bear 2008, is 38 cm in size and limited to 3000 pieces. London 1908 and not only was the city a glow with the Olympics but demand for the Steiff bears had reached unrivalled levels. The UK market was hungry for new innovations and lead by Hubert Hughes, the UK Steiff representative, various wild and wonderful ideas reached Giengen. It is already well known that six brightly colored bears resulted from such brainstorming across the water here in the UK, but more winning ideas followed. The British market wanted their Steiff bear’s eyes to 'sparkle'. Steiff responded to this by creating bears whose eyes were made of glass. Such extravagance added extra costs to the bears, but when they arrived, the cost was overlooked as they truly did sparkle! 100 years later Steiff is very proud to pay tribute to this sparkling innovation of 1908. Working alongside the bear from the company archives who was gifted with these special glass eyes in 1908, the British Collectors' Teddy bear 2008 embraces all the magical ingredients that propelled the Steiff bears to unparalleled success. His eyes that overflow with expression are made of genuine glass, a material used at that time in the UK only for special orders. Made of the finest reddish blond mohair with his bearish growling voice and very traditional English tie he is a true homage to the Steiff Teddy bears of yesteryear. He comes in a box with certificate of authenticity. Steiff British Collector bears have been issued since 1989.

Amidst great fanfare, the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic embarked on her maiden voyage from Southampton on the 10th April, 1912. Less than five days later, the doomed ship collided with an iceberg and sank, taking the lives of over 1,500 passengers with her. In the weeks following the Titanic tragedy, Steiff created 500 black "mourning bears" exclusively for the English market. Displayed in shops throughout London, they sold out virtually overnight. Today, they are among the most rare and collectible bears in the world. Leo 1912 Titanic Mourning bear is an authentic, scaled-up re-creation of the original 1912 Titanic mourning bear. Made of luxurious genuine mohair, he has red-rimmed eyes, left bloodshot after the tears he shed in mourning for the victims of the Titanic tragedy. His expression is hand-stitched and he is fully jointed, so you can change his pose to your liking. He is made especially for the Danbury Mint in UK & USA, is 53 cm in size, limited to 1000 pieces only and does not come in a box but has a certificate of authenticity.

click here for big picture Tranquility breeds strength. Strength that comes from your center - the belly: This is one of the principles of Buddhist philosophy. The Buddha bear is a part of this tradition. He is made of brass-colored mohair and his facial expression, posture and aura were inspired by classic Buddha figures. This bear is five-ways jointed and his legs are slightly bent, which enables him to sit in the lotus position in which energy can flow freely. His belly, which according to Buddhist philosophy constitutes the main focus, is somewhat larger: his nose, mouth and claws are embroidered with gold-colored thread. The corners of the bear's black eyes are hand-painted in order to give his expression depth and dignity. These qualities make the Buddha bear a friend with strong character in everyday life that will gladly accompany his owner throughout all of life's questions. As a source of quiet harmony, he reminds us to consciously experience the moment as such in order to find the peace within ourselves and our environment. As a wise Buddhist proverb says - it is the small gestures and actions of everyday life that make up the future. This new bear stands for all this - and much more. He is 33 cm in size, limited to 2008 pieces and comes in a box with certificate of authenticity.

click here for big picture Have you ever considered what is truly typical for a Teddy bear and just what makes him so special? Whether in classic brown or other unusual colors, materials and patterns or whether it is clothed. Whether large or small - we always immediately recognize the Teddy bear as such. That is because of his friendly, open nature and his characteristic body shape: slightly stocky; with a pronounced clipped snout; a round, cuddly tummy; friendly, smiling eyes; and his wide, outstretched arms that are always ready for a happy, affectionate hug. That is exactly what makes this friendly Teddy bear leopard, a classic ambassador of the Teddy bear species - even though at first sight he might look as if he just escaped from the jungle, his beautiful, leopard-like patterned fur looks so perfectly "real". The Teddy bear leopard delights Steiff friends with his endearing nature, his soft fur made of high-quality alpaca that was painted by hand with the typical leopard pattern, as well as his deep, growling voice. His delicate nose and his mouth are hand-sewn and his silent paws are made of felted wool. This Teddy bear leopard is the first of three unmistakable bear representatives that were created by the artist, Peter Lorenz, from Leverkusen on the occasion of the 2005 Teddy Bear Parade in Giengen. The original was 1.2 meters high and made of fiber-glass synthetic material. This Teddy bear leopard is 40 cm in size, limited to 2008 pieces and comes in a box with certificate of authenticity. This series consists out of 3 Teddy bears and they are: Leopard (2008), Zebra (2009) and Tiger (2010).
